Ugo Rondinone (b.1964)

Hochschule für Angewandte Kunst, Vienna, AT

Born 1964 in Brunnen, Switzerland. Ugo Rondinone graduated from Hochschule für Angewandte Kunst, Vienna, and currently lives and works in New York, US. In 1991, 1994 and 1995, Rondinone has awarded Eidgenössischer Preis für freie Kunst from the Switzerland government and in 2007 he has participated in the 52th Venice Biennale as the representing artist of the Switzerland Pavilion.

Ugo Rondinone’s work oscillates between the romantic outlook of the natural world and the existential introspection of the inner world. He plays on our intuitive and impulsive recognition of motifs like a clown, a tree or a rainbow. The rainbow in particular primarily signals beauty, emancipation and innocence. In 2016, Rondinone presented a large scale outdoor sculpture project <Seven Magic Mountains> at a desert near Las Vegas, US, and in 2018 presented <Liverpool Mountain>, a first-ever monumental sculpture in Europe, next to Tate Liverpool, London, UK. In 2019, Rondinone's <Sun Sculpture>, the same sculpture installed at the Versailles Palace, Paris, was presented at Art Basel Unlimited.

Rondinone's works are collected in world's renown collections and institutions including the Bass Museum of Art, Miami; Centre Pompidou, Paris; Galleria Nazionale d’Arte Moderna e  Contemporanea, Rome; Migros Museum, Musée d’Art Contemporain, Strasbourg; National Gallery of Canada, Ottawa; New Museum, New York; The Art Gallery of New South Wales, Sydney; The Museum of Modern Art, New York, among others.
